What are Betta Fish?

Betta fish are probably the most recognized type of fish in the field of aquarium, and Betta fish are often sold in tiny cups of water, although this controversial and hotly debuted practice is considered as being inhumane by many hobbyists, despite the fact that betta fish are a quite extraordinary type of fish which takes most of its oxygen from the surface, implying that they are therefore able to exist in oxygen depleted water.

Betta fish are typically bred in captivity, and what happen is that first the male betta fish builds a bubble-nest at the surface, which is done in order to signify the male betta fish readiness to mate, and once the female betta fish lays eggs, the male then scoops up the eggs into his mouth and spits them out into the bubble nest. Then, the male betta fish will tend to the nest until the young betta fish hatch.

Generally, betta fish prefer warm temperatures of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and while the betta fish is able to breathe oxygen and survive in non-ideal conditions for a certain period of time, it is still not recommended to keep them in a bowl or small container without any heat and filtration.

Where Can I Find a Good and Cheap Betta Fish Tank?

If you are looking for a good and cheap betta fish tank, you can rest assured in knowing that there are many locations available to you that offer them. You can usually find a good betta fish tank at any upscale aquarium store, although some will be pricier at certain stores than others. This is the same with basically everything else however, so as with anything else, when looking for a good betta fish tank you will want to put some time and consideration into your decision, so that in the end you can get the best quality and worth for your money as possible.

Once you have bought your betta fish tank, you need to remember to clean it frequently, and platies, guppies, and other small fish are fine to put in with your bettas. However you should avoid small neon tetras, as bettas have been known to dine on the tetras.

Also remember that although you have most likely seen bettas in small containers of water, you should refrain from doing this, as your betta fish will not thrive properly in those small cups. Basically the minimum size should be a standard goldfish bowl, and the 2 to 5 gallon tanks are even better.

Fish Tanks Require Our Love And Care

From small one-quart bowls to 55-gallon aquariums and numerous sizes in between, these fish tanks all need proper care to keep their inhabitants alive and healthy. However, the success of your foray into fish tanks will depend on one main thing; the amount of time and effort you are willing to put into them.

The entire idea about fish tanks has changed over the past few years with some aquariums now referred to as aqua furniture or aqua art. There are aquariums made to be recessed into a wall, or designed to fit into a small corner. Fish tanks can even be special ordered in most shapes to fit your specific needs. Those in the wall, framed by wood, may appear to be a living painting of art.

Materials used in fish tanks has also changed over the years. Clear, molded acrylic is gradually replacing glass as the primary material since it has been developed not to become cloudy over period of time. This also reduces the danger of breakage that exists with glass and can add more years of enjoyment to you fish tanks.

Having one or two small gold fish in a bowl does not require a huge investment from your part. Food for the fish and the willingness to change to the water when needed will usually keep the fish alive for the duration of their normal life span. Planning to raise more or bigger fish will require more accessories for your fish tank.

With fish tanks holding ten gallons or more of water, you will basically need a water pump and filter set to keep the water clean and moving. Fish require oxygen to survive and without fresh air being introduced constantly, they may suffocate.

A heater is also a good idea for fish tanks as it will help maintain the water at a constant temperature ensuring your fish will not be cooked if it gets too hot or lethargic if it is too cold.

Bigger fish tanks will require bigger accessories, and if you have fish tanks special ordered in unusual shapes, the manufacturer of the fish tanks will most likely be your only source for accessories such as the bottom filter and the lamp hood.
